FD Calculator – Calculate Fixed Deposit Returns Instantly

A Fixed Deposit (FD) is one of the safest and most popular investment options in India. It offers guaranteed returns at a fixed interest rate for a specific tenure. Our FD Calculator helps you estimate your maturity amount and total interest earned over the tenure, allowing you to plan your investments better. It supports various compounding frequencies used by Indian banks.

How to Use the FD Calculator?

  1. Enter the initial deposit amount (Principal).
  2. Input the annual interest rate offered by your bank (typically higher for senior citizens).
  3. Select the tenure (duration) of your fixed deposit in months or years.
  4. Choose the compounding frequency (most Indian banks use quarterly compounding).
  5. Click calculate to instantly see your maturity amount and interest earned.

Formula for Fixed Deposit

For compound interest FDs, the formula is: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t). Here, A is the maturity amount, P is the principal deposit, r is the annual interest rate in decimal, n is the number of times interest is compounded per year, and t is the tenure in years.

Top Tips for FD Investors

  • Look for special FD schemes for senior citizens, which usually offer 0.50% extra interest.
  • Check the compounding frequency of the bank. Quarterly compounding yields higher returns than half-yearly or yearly.
  • Consider tax implications. Interest earned from FDs is taxable under "Income from Other Sources".
  • Submit Form 15G or 15H if your total income is below the taxable limit to prevent TDS deduction on your FD interest.
  • For tax savings, you can invest in 5-year tax-saving FDs which fall under Section 80C.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring the impact of inflation and taxes on FD returns, leading to a negative real rate of return.
  • Withdrawing an FD before maturity, which usually incurs a penalty of 0.5% to 1% on the interest rate.
  • Not submitting Form 15G/15H when eligible, leading to unnecessary TDS deductions.
  • Auto-renewing FDs without checking if current market interest rates have increased.
